The Hardest Dogs to Train… (Let’s Be Honest)

People ask this all the time—

“What’s the hardest breed to train?”

The truth?

It’s not just the breed.

But yes… some dogs are absolutely harder than others.

Both things can be true.

Every dog is trainable

but not every dog is easy.

Why?

Because genetics matter.

Dogs were bred for specific jobs.

And when those instincts don’t match the home they’re in…

that’s when we see problems.

Some of the most challenging dogs tend to be:

High-drive working breeds

(Malinois, German Shepherds, Dutch Shepherds)

Built to work, think, and go all day. Without structure—they unravel.

Independent breeds

(Huskies, Hounds, Akitas)

They don’t live to please you. They were bred to think for themselves.

Guarding breeds

(Cane Corso, Rottweiler, Doberman)

Powerful, loyal—but require confident leadership and early guidance.

Terriers

(Jack Russell, Pit Bull–type dogs)

Relentless, intense, and determined. They don’t quit—ever.

Herding breeds

(Border Collies, Aussies, Heelers)

Highly intelligent but can become anxious, reactive, or obsessive without purpose.

But here’s where people get it wrong…

👉 The hardest dogs aren’t just about breed

👉 They’re the dogs with the wrong environment

The dogs we see struggle the most are often:

Dogs with no structure

Dogs allowed to rehearse bad behaviors for years

Dogs with anxiety or fear that’s never been addressed

Dogs living with inconsistent leadershi

And the hard truth?

👉 The hardest dogs to train… are the ones with humans who aren’t consistent.

Because training doesn’t end when your dog leaves a program—

that’s where it begins.

At the farm, we’ve worked with dogs that:

Couldn’t be walked

Couldn’t be touched

Couldn’t settle

And we’ve watched them completely transform.

Not because they were “fixed”

But because they were finally given:

Structure. Clarity. Consistency.

So yes—some dogs are harder.

Some require more time, more skill, more commitment.

But those “hard” dogs?

They’re often the most intelligent…

the most capable…

and the most impressive once you get it right.

👉 They’re not too much.

👉 They’re just too much for the wrong situation

And when you match the right dog with the right structure?

That’s when everything changes.
